Kniphofia (Asphodelaceae)

A solitary non clump-forming species from South Africa, where it is found growing in wet peaty soil on steep grassy mountain sides. Forming a thick stem to more than 1m long, terminating in a crown of strap-shaped leaves to 1.5m long, with a dense ovoid inflorescence of coral-red buds, opening to white or yellow, from June on.
