A medium to large sized shrub with dark ageing to black stems with contrasting butter-yellow oblong thin textured leaves to 12 cm long held on long petioles to 1.5 cm long. With an abundance of contrasting clusters of small glossy black orbicular fruit held in the leaf axils. Resulting from the dense umbels of small yellow flowers held close to the ends of the branches before the new foliage emerges in spring. For full sun to part shade in any type of fertile moisture retentive soil. Best grown in sun to part shade in a freely drained acid-neutral soil with some moisture retention. From our seed collection gathered from Mt. Shibamori, Aomori, Japan in the autumn of 2005.
