Phytolacca (Phytolaccaceae) BSWJ10263

rugosa

Although considered poisonous some species are eaten, not something we would recommend. One of our collections from the lower slopes of Volcán de Orizaba, Mexico's highest peak, at 2000m in 2004, where we found this perennial species growing in small colonies. With chunky stems to 1 m tall bearing narrow elliptic leaves to 10cm long, with upright terminal spikes of dark purple fruit, with a spread of 1.5m. Sometimes cultivated as it has many valued properties, used as an ink or dye. Full sun or light shade in any type of drained fertile soil.
