From relatively high in the mountains of the Nara District of Honshu, Japan at 1200m. Where this perennial species grew in moist alpine forests in the shade of shrubs. Forming loose mats of ovate serrated leaves purplish on their undersides, on laxly upright stems to 20cm long. With dense terminal spikes of purple-blue long lipped flowers for most of the summer months. Easily grown in any drained fertile soil in part or full shade. Our collection from 1998.
