Description

Forming a medium sized multi-stemmed open shrub 3m tall, with long pinnate aromatic leaves to 30cm, consisting of lanceolate leaflets to 8cm long on distinctly dark reddish coloured young wood with thick spines. Inflorescences are terminal cymes of small yellowish flowers ageing to capsules which split to reveal the distinct black glossy seed. A rare species which we were fortunate to find near Kagoshima southern Japan in 2006. Best grown in full sun to part shade, in a sheltered well draining soil.
