Description
Our collection from the area surrounding Atitlan, Guatemala where we found this plant growing in large colonies. A perennial species sometimes cultivated as it has many valued properties, used as an ink and dye. On chunky stems to 1.5m tall with narrow leaves to 10cm long, bearing upright terminal spikes of purple fruit, spread to 3m. Although considered poisonous some species are eaten, not something we would recommend. Full sun in any drained soil.
